Why I stopped writing content for Google and started writing for people instead

For years I focused on keyword density and exact match headings. I thought that was the only way to get traffic. Then I ran a test on two blog posts about the same topic. One was optimized for SEO and the other was just written clearly for a human reader. After 6 months the human focused post had 3 times more engagement and actually ranked higher. Now I write naturally first and check keywords after, not before. Has anyone else seen better results from ditching strict SEO formulas?

Wait, three times more engagement AND ranked higher? That's actually wild. I've been chasing exact match key phrases for years like a dog after a bone. Now I'm sitting here wondering how many hours I wasted rewriting "best brake pads for Honda Civic" twenty different ways. You ran a real test too, not just theory. That's what gets me.

Read a similar case study on Search Engine Land last month.
