Can we talk about the $6 jar of pickled herring that ruined my whole week
I grabbed a jar of pickled herring at a Baltic deli in Chicago two weeks ago for $6 because my grandma used to eat it on rye toast and I wanted that cozy feeling back. Big mistake. The brine was so sweet it tasted like someone dumped syrup in a fish tank, and I ate three bites before my whole kitchen smelled like low tide. My roommate walked in, sniffed once, and left to get McDonald's. I tried to save it by mixing it with sour cream and dill like a recipe online suggested, but that just made pink slime. Six bucks down the drain plus a loaf of bread I toasted for nothing. Does anyone have a brand or a homemade brine that actually tastes like real herring and not dessert?
Sweet brine herring is a crime against fish and your roommate was smart to bail. The pink slime part really got me, sour cream cant fix a jar that came pre ruined. Next time just look for the ones in wine sauce or plain salt brine, the sweet stuff is for people who want candy that swims.
