Checked out a Habitat ReStore and found a major plumbing issue

I stopped by the ReStore on Elm Street last weekend and noticed almost every used sink and toilet had old supply lines with corroded nuts. You should inspect those before buying, or expect to replace all the hardware. Anyone dealt with hidden damage from their ReStore finds?

Overheard my nephew arguing with his friend about AI art stealing from real artists

My nephew Jake (he's 16) was going off about how AI art is just "recycling" and his friend said it's "inspiration" the same way humans do it. But here's the thing - I looked into it and some AI models like Stable Diffusion were trained on like 2.3 billion images scraped from the web without permission. On one hand, artists are losing commissions to people typing prompts into a box. On the other hand, my friend who can't draw uses it to make cool birthday cards for his kid. Where do you draw the line between fair use and just taking someone's work? Has anyone else had this argument and come out with a solid take?

Wasted $30 on a loaded burger that was literally all bread

I stopped at a Burger Shack in Phoenix last Tuesday and ordered their new triple bacon something burger. Took one bite and it was like chewing on a dry sponge, barely any meat or toppings for $30 with a drink. The bun was huge and the patty was this tiny thin thing hiding underneath. Anyone else get fooled by those fancy menu pics that look nothing like what you get?

That tip about cleaning contact points with a pencil eraser actually fixed a dead shutter

Old timer on a forum told me to try a regular pencil eraser on the battery contacts of a Canon AE-1 I'd given up on, and it worked like magic after three other things failed. Has anyone else had a weird 'hail mary' fix actually save a body you were about to part out?

Switched from Bali coworking spaces to a $15/month local library card in Mexico City, and my focus tripled in 6 weeks.

Turns out the constant free beer and small talk in those Bali spots was killing my deep work, but now at the library in Condesa I crank through projects by noon and have the afternoons free to actually explore the city instead of pretending to network - has anyone else found a boring workspace way better than a trendy one?

Last week I found a moon landing 'proof' video that got me thinking about how we even define evidence anymore

It was this 45-minute thing from 3 years ago with side-by-side NASA shots and some guy named Kevin pointing out shadow angles, but then I looked up his source and it was just a blog post from 2012 with zero citations - has anyone else run into these rabbit holes where the 'proof' just circles back to itself?

Remember when you could get a hostel room for $10 in Paris?

I was in Paris back in 2005 and paid 10 euros a night for a dorm bed near Montmartre, now the same bunk is like 45 bucks. Anyone else feel like budget travel just doesn't hit the same way it used to lol?

Had a main hoist brake fail on a Liebherr LTM 1300 last Friday in Tacoma

We were lowering a 15-ton HVAC unit about 20 feet off the deck when the load started free-falling. I hit the emergency stop and the secondary brake caught it, but it dropped another three feet with a nasty jolt. The rigger on the ground went pale. The shop found a cracked piston in the brake housing. Anyone else had a close call with a hoist brake on a mobile crane?

My neighbor told me to use duct tape on a leaking pipe and it was a bad idea

He said it would hold for a week until I could get a plumber... but it burst after about 36 hours. I came home to a huge mess in my basement laundry room. The water damage cost me over $500 to fix the drywall alone. I should have just shut the water off and used a proper pipe clamp from the hardware store. Has anyone else had a well-meaning tip go this wrong with plumbing?

My booking calendar hit 90% full for the first time this week

I opened my own small studio in Portland about a year ago, and for a long time I was lucky to be half booked. This week, my schedule filled up to 90% with regulars and new people. It felt like a real shift from just getting by to actually building something. Has anyone else had a moment where their bookings just seemed to turn a corner?
