Spent $22 on fancy truffle mac and cheese at a place in Austin and it tasted like wet socks
So my girlfriend dragged me to this trendy spot on South Congress last Friday and I caved and got their "elevated" mac and cheese with truffle oil and gruyere for $22. I make boxed mac at home with extra sharp cheddar and a splash of hot sauce and honestly it hits way harder than whatever that sad bowl of noodles was. The truffle oil made the whole thing taste like gasoline mixed with dirt and I could not finish it, which never happens to me. My girlfriend got a plain grilled cheese for $14 and even she said mine is better. I am not saying all fancy comfort food is bad, but if you are charging me more than a full meal for mac and cheese, it better not taste like a lawn. Has anyone else paid too much for a "gourmet" version of a childhood food and regretted it?
