Appreciation post: the rigger in Baltimore yelled "swing the load, don't drag it" and I still flinch when I see a tagline go slack
Watched a new guy drag a 4,000 lb beam across the deck last Tuesday because he didn't want to wait for a tagline, and all I could hear was that old rigger's voice from my first year on a job in Baltimore yelling "swing the load, don't drag it," so now I want to know if anyone else still hears the one guy who chewed them out early on every time they see a rookie cut a corner.
That old rigger's voice never really leaves you, does it? I had a foreman years ago who'd smack the side of your hard hat if he caught you dragging a load and yell "cranes lift, mules drag," and I still feel that smack every time I watch somebody try to shortcut a pick. Those early chewings stick because they were right, and now we're the ones yelling it at the new guys.
