Port of Savannah crane yard visit left me doubting the new auto-leveling system
I went down to the Port of Savannah last month to watch the new Liebherr units work the container stacks. Everyone in the yard was praising the auto-leveling boom assist, but I watched six picks in a row where the system corrected for a list that wasn't there. The operators were fighting it, adding manual trim every time. That's not a time saver, that's extra work with a false sense of safety. I've run older friction cranes for 18 years and I trust the seat of my pants over that software. Has anyone else run these side by side and found the manual mode actually smoother?
Software fighting the operator is the worst kind of upgrade. Sounds like the sensors are calibrated too sensitive or just plain wrong for real yard conditions. I've seen this before with auto systems, they work great in the demo and fall apart when the ground is uneven or the wind picks up. Trust your gut on this one.
