Finally realized my dialogue tags were doing all the heavy lifting
Been writing for 5 years and it hit me last Thursday while rereading an old story: every line had a tag like 'she whispered anxiously' or 'he growled'. The dialogue itself was dead. Took out 80% of the tags and suddenly the words had to actually carry the scene. Anyone else find they lean on tags to fake tension that should be in the lines themselves?

Oh come on, tags aren't the villain here. Plenty of great writers lean on them and their books still sell just fine.
