Why does nobody talk about killing off your favorite character?
I spent 3 months on a story set in Portland and refused to kill off the mentor figure. Kept writing him into corners. Finally realized he was blocking every plot point. A beta reader asked me straight up, "Why is he still alive?" I deleted him in one sitting and the whole draft opened up. Anyone else had a character they were too attached to that hurt the story?
Have you ever read about how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes and people freaked out so much he brought him back? Letting a character go when the story needs it is way harder than it sounds.
