My smart lock decided to lock me out of my own house for three hours

So I'm standing on my porch in Seattle at 8 PM last Tuesday, holding two bags of groceries, and my smart lock just blinks red at me. The app said 'connection error' but my phone had full bars. I tried the backup keypad code, nothing. Even the physical key I keep in my car (thank god) wouldn't turn because the deadbolt was electronically jammed. I had to call the company's support line, and after 45 minutes on hold, they told me to remove the battery cover and do a hard reset with a paperclip. In the rain. My ice cream melted. Has anyone else had a smart home device fail so completely that the old-school backup plan didn't even work? What's your go-to manual override for these things?

Keep a flathead screwdriver in your car glove box for exactly this kind of meltdown. I had to pop the whole lock off the door once when the motor died. Now I check the battery level in the app every single month, and I still hide a real key with a neighbor as a last resort because the keypad is just another electronic thing that can fail.
