Vent: I paid $140 for a VPN bundle that did nothing for the one problem I had
I want to be honest here because I used to roll my eyes at people who said this. For about 8 months I was convinced a VPN was the missing piece of my home setup. I dropped $140 on a 3 year plan for one of the big ones after some guy on YouTube said it would stop my smart TV from phoning home and block sketchy stuff on my network. So I set it up on my router, felt like a genius for a week, and then ran a packet capture on my own LAN just to see. Turns out the TV was still chatting away, because it was talking to Amazon and Roku servers that the VPN happily tunnels, and half my local devices couldn't see each other anymore for printing and file sharing. What actually fixed my issue was two hours in my router settings: turning off UPnP, killing WPS, and putting the TV on a guest network with its own rules. Cost me nothing. I already had the router. I am not saying VPNs are junk, they are fine for coffee shop wifi on my laptop, but for home network control it was $140 for a false sense of safety. Did anyone here get real value from one, or did I just buy the wrong thing?
