Paid $220 for a "heavy duty" chinese injector puller, snapped on the first 6.7 and cracked the head
Last month a customer brought in a 2015 Ram 6.7 with a stuck injector on cyl 4, and I figured this was the perfect time to try a cheaper puller I saw online instead of borrowing the shop's OTC one. The thing bent at the threads on maybe the third crank of the slide hammer, then the collet let go and shot the cap sideways into the valve cover, and I ended up pulling the head anyway. Total damage was about $1,400 in parts and a full weekend I lost, plus the $220 for the tool that is now a paperweight in my bottom drawer. Stick with the name brand pullers or the hydraulic ones, this was the dumbest way I could have saved $150. Has anyone had good luck with a specific brand that will not fold on a stubborn injector?
That does not sound like a heavy duty tool at all, more like a cheap copy that looks the part. The threads letting go on the third crank is the real tell, because a decent puller should take way more than that before anything gives. I would not toss every budget tool in the same bucket though, some of them hold fine on an injector that comes out easy. Your case was a nasty one and maybe the head was coming off either way once that cap went flying.
