Question about the stat that 96% of first-time site visitors aren't ready to buy
I was poking around looking for content ideas for a client's site last Tuesday and landed on a stat that stopped me cold. Something like 96% of people hitting a site for the first time are not ready to buy anything, and most of them never come back. What surprised me more was that adding one simple email capture popup with a 10% off offer got the click rate from 1.2% up to 4.8% in about three weeks. I had been pouring all my effort into the product pages and ignoring the top of the funnel completely. Now I am trying to figure out what actually keeps those folks warm over the long haul, since most of them will not buy for months. Has anyone here had luck with a specific follow-up sequence length or a particular lead magnet type for a project like this?
Eh, I'd pump the brakes on treating that 96% stat like gospel. Bounce rates and "not ready to buy" numbers get thrown around a lot and the way they're measured is usually messy. A 1.2 to 4.8 bump sounds nice but it's also three weeks of one popup, so who knows if it holds up.
