A random chat at a co-working spot changed my mind about coworking memberships

I've been bouncing from cafe to cafe for 6 months, convinced that paying $200 a month for a desk was a waste. Then last Tuesday in Bali, this guy next to me at a coffee shop said he landed 3 new clients just from chatting with people at his coworking space. He showed me his calendar - he did 8 networking coffees in one week there. I always thought the value was just having a chair and wifi, but hearing how he turned casual conversations into actual paid work made me rethink everything. I signed up for a trial at Outpost in Ubud yesterday. Has anyone else found that coworking spaces actually help with making money, not just saving on coffee receipts?

You said "Did the networking actually pay off for you once you tried it?" but I think that's missing the point a bit. The guy in Bali didn't just sign up and hope people talked to him. He made a real effort to go to those networking coffees and started conversations on purpose. Just getting a membership doesn't mean you'll automatically land clients. You gotta actually walk up to people and talk, not just sit at your desk with headphones on. I joined a coworking space for a month and saw the same people every day who never said a word to anyone. So yeah, it can pay off, but only if you put in the work like that guy did.

@patricialee you're spot on about that. I tried a coworking spot last year and forced myself to say hi to at least one new person every day. Ended up getting a solid referral from a graphic designer I chatted with by the coffee machine. Just showing up ain't enough, you gotta open your mouth and actually talk to people.
