Showerthought: I heard a guy at the hardware store say you should always use a primer before painting anything, even over old paint.
I've repainted my whole house in Des Moines without primer for a decade and never had a single issue with peeling or coverage. Is this just a way to sell more product, or is there a specific situation where skipping it actually causes problems?

Guess my walls are just built different, because I've also skipped primer for years. Maybe we've just been lucky with the existing paint quality. I'll probably keep tempting fate until something peels.

Right? My whole place in Cedar Rapids is the same, just a fresh coat over the old stuff and it looks perfect.
