Hate to say it, but the picket fence trend is overrated

Saw a neighbor drop $3,200 on white vinyl pickets last week and all I could think is, why not just go with a simple split rail and some native shrubs? Has anyone else found that the classic suburban look ages worse than the cheaper, low-maintenance setups?

Spent $2,800 on pickets last spring and honestly regret it, this post made me see how plain they look against native shrubs.
