Rant: My neighbor's $20 junk sander cost me an entire Saturday

Borrowed a belt sander from the guy next door for a deck refinishing job. He swore it worked fine but the belt kept slipping off every 5 minutes. After 4 hours I gave up and drove to Home Depot to rent a real one for $35. Finished the whole deck in 2 hours flat. Has anyone else learned the hard way that borrowing cheap tools just wastes more time?

Wait, the Home Depot rental was only $35 for a whole day? Around here it's like $50 for a few hours. Not saying your neighbor's junk sander wasn't a total pain though, those cheap belt sanders are just built different.

It's funny how the "borrow from a neighbor" rule always ends up costing you more in frustration than just renting the right tool.
