Talked to a pipeline inspector near Baton Rouge last week and he flipped my thinking on cutter suction wear rates
He told me he tracks every single pump hour on a whiteboard, not a computer. Said his digital readouts were off by 12% across three jobs. I always trusted the onboard diagnostics, but now I'm double-checking with a manual log. Any of you guys run into a case where your screen data didn't match the actual wear?

Is he tracking the same thing the computer measures? Most digital systems log running time from the engine or hydraulic drive, not actual cutterhead contact with material. That 12% difference could be the computer counting warm up and repositioning time while his board only counts digging.

Is a 12% difference really worth this much analysis?

Read a piece in World Dredging last month that said 70% of operators catch at least a 5% discrepancy when they cross-check. @miamitchell, I think that 12% gap is exactly the kind of thing that adds up to real money on a big job.
