Got told I was sanding drywall all wrong by an old painter at Home Depot last Saturday
He said I was pressing too hard and making swirls that would show through paint, so I switched to feathering light passes and now my finish coat actually looks smooth instead of a mess, has anyone else spent years doing a basic step wrong and had a random stranger set you straight?

That "feathering" tip is a real game changer, I learned that one the hard way too.

oh man, @victorb17, i had a buddy who tried doing that feathering technique without watching any videos first and ended up with this clumpy mess that looked like some kinda sad bird nest. took him like an hour to fix it.

Totally wonder if the problem isn't just the technique itself but what kind of brush they're using. I messed around with feathering for a while and swapped between a couple different brushes, and it made a huge difference. One brush just sucked up all the product and left these weird streaks. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like nobody mentions that part when they talk about the feathering trick.
