Been bending conduit for 5 years and just now found out I was reading the book wrong
I always lined up the arrow on my bender with the back of the 90. That's just how my old man taught me and I never questioned it. Last month a guy on a big commercial job in Phoenix walked up and asked why I was adding an extra 2 inches to every offset. He showed me the star marking on the bender and explained thats for stub ups. I had been compensating wrong for years, adding my own fudge factor and still making it work. Felt like a complete hack when he pulled out the greenlee manual and pointed to the diagram. How did you guys learn what each mark on the bender actually means? Did someone correct you early or did you figure it out the hard way like me?
Hmm, I gotta push back a little on this one. 5 years is a long time to be doing something that works, even if it's not by the book. In my experience, a lot of old timers have their own ways that are just as accurate once you figure them out. Your fudge factor was basically your own personal math that got the job done. I'm not saying learning the marks is wrong, but that guy acting like you were a hack doesn't sit right with me. We've all got little tricks we picked up that aren't in the manual. Your mileage may vary, but I'd take a working system over a textbook answer any day if the prints are clean.
Wonder if this is really worth getting worked up over, sounds like the prints got signed off either way. Some people just like barking about technique.
