Appreciation post: Remembering my first soldering iron from RadioShack

I used to rely on that single 25 watt pencil iron for everything, but after a tricky SMD job in 2018, I finally upgraded to a proper station with temp control. Anyone else still have their first tool kicking around the bench?

Honestly this whole thing reminds me of how we get used to making do with basic stuff. Like @hannahreed said, you can make the old tool work, but the upgrade just removes so much daily friction. It's wild how a simple temp dial can change your whole mood at the workbench. You don't realize how much mental energy you wasted on the workaround until it's gone.

Tbh, that 25 watt iron was probably fine for SMD with the right tip and technique. The temp control is a game-changer for consistency though.

Game-changer" feels a bit strong for a soldering iron. It's just a hot piece of metal at the end of the day.
