My 8-year-old niece asked me why I fix things instead of just buying new ones, and I didn't have a quick answer.

She was watching me solder a broken headphone jack on her mom's old laptop. She just said, 'But Aunt Julia, a new one is faster, right?' I started explaining about cost and waste, but then she asked if I liked the 'treasure hunt' part. She called it that because of all the tiny parts. It made me stop and think that maybe the 'why' is simpler than I make it. It's the puzzle, not just the saving money. Anyone else have a moment that reframed why you do this work?
