Remember when 'fruit punch' actually had fruit in it?
I was at my kid's school picnic in Portland about five years ago, and they had these little juice boxes. The front label said '100% Vitamin C' and 'Real Fruit Punch' with a big picture of strawberries and oranges. I turned the box over and the first ingredient was water, then high fructose corn syrup. The 'fruit' part was just a tiny bit of pear and apple juice concentrate. It hit me that the pictures and the words are totally separate from what's inside. I mean, my parents would buy that stuff thinking it was a healthy choice. Now I just ignore the front and go straight to the ingredient list, every single time. Does anyone else have a rule like that for checking labels?

It's a bummer when the front of the box feels like a trick. I get why you check the back, but I don't always have time for that at the store. Sometimes you just grab the juice box with the fun cartoon for the party and hope for the best. I figure a little sugar at a picnic isn't the end of the world, and the kids are happy.

My grocery cart is basically a sugar-filled guessing game.
