Shoutout to the little diner in Akron that still makes real mashed potatoes

Last week I went to a new 'elevated comfort food' spot and got these weird, gluey whipped potatoes that tasted like box mix. It made me think of Gus's Diner, where I ate three years ago and they still peel and boil russets every morning. Now everything is about being fast or fancy, and the simple stuff gets lost. Anyone know a place near them that still does the basics right?

You know, I always thought russets were the only way to go for real mash. But seeing @leej52 mention they use Yukon Golds at Gus's actually makes so much sense. That explains the creamier texture I could never get right at home. It's not just about the potato type, it's about caring enough to pick the right one for the job. Places that cut those corners end up with that weird gluey stuff.

Gus's is great, but they actually use Yukon Golds, not russets... my cousin worked the morning prep shift. The key is they leave a bit of skin in for texture, and use real butter from that local dairy.

Oh the "real butter from that local dairy" part is the real secret weapon. I feel like my home fries are just a sad tribute now. I guess I need a cousin on the inside to get the good intel.
