A customer told me stripping is the only way to get a perfect finish, but I'm not so sure.

I was at a hardware store in Tacoma yesterday and a guy in line was telling his friend you have to chemically strip every piece down to bare wood for a true professional result. He said anything else is just a cover-up. I've had great luck with careful sanding and a good shellac barrier coat on pieces that aren't too far gone. It saves hours of messy work. What's your take on when a full strip is really needed versus a solid repair?

Oh man, stripping a good antique dresser almost ruined the veneer until I sanded and shellacked it instead.

Strip it only if the old finish is totally wrecked.
