Saw a field of blight-resistant chestnut trees on a hike near Asheville
I was hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway last weekend and came across a small, fenced-off plot with a sign from the American Chestnut Foundation. It was a test area for genetically modified trees designed to fight the blight that wiped them out. Honestly, it was a bit weird to see science quietly working in the middle of the woods like that. Has anyone else stumbled on a real-world test site for a GMO crop or animal?

Wait, they're just out there in the open like that? I mean, I figured that stuff was locked up in some company farm, not just a fenced spot in the woods. It's kind of wild to think you could just hike right past it.

I grew up hearing about the chestnut blight from my grandpa, so I always thought those trees were just gone for good. Seeing a test plot like that in person, with real trees fighting back, really got to me. It made the whole idea of GMOs feel less like a lab experiment and more like a rescue mission. I used to picture scientists in white coats, not a quiet fence line in the woods. How can you argue with bringing back a piece of the forest that was stolen? It feels like fixing a mistake we made a long time ago.
