Persisting through faded ink, I uncovered a Civil War soldier's forgotten letter.

For months, I've been working on transcribing a bundle of letters from my ancestor. With some help from a historian friend, I learned to use spectral imaging and finally deciphered a crucial passage. What methods have you found most effective for recovering text from deteriorated paper?

Try shining a light through it, that sometimes works. But half the time you're just squinting at a coffee stain someone thought was a signature.

At my last job, we had to verify signatures on old paper forms. I spent hours shining a desk lamp through those pages. Half the time it was just dirt or water marks, not even coffee. It felt like such a waste of time, and my eyes hurt for days. Now I always double check with a magnifying glass first. But yeah, your point about coffee stains is so true, it's frustrating.

Betty's comment about squinting at coffee stains hits home. I once spent a whole afternoon trying to read a "smear" on a census record, tilting it every which way under a lamp. Turns out it was just a weird shadow from the scanner lid. I felt so silly. Spectral imaging sounds amazing, but my budget is more like a bright LED light and a lot of guesswork.
