TIL the growing reliance on critic aggregates is transforming pre-release film discourse
I've observed that platforms compiling critic scores now heavily influence audience decisions before a movie even hits theaters. This trend means that comprehensive written assessments from critics are often overlooked in favor of a simplified numerical rating. As someone who oversees a crew, I see how collective metrics can streamline evaluations, but in film culture, it risks diminishing the depth of critical analysis. This shift is making aggregated data a primary filter for cinematic value, altering how we discover and discuss movies.

Remember when you used to find a critic whose taste aligned with yours and followed their writing? I worry aggregates create a kind of critical monoculture, where a single number flattens all those distinct voices. It feels like we're outsourcing our own curiosity about a film's potential, trading nuanced disagreement for the safety of a consensus score.

Ever think that aggregate scores might be making critics themselves LESS likely to take risks? Like, they see the consensus forming and tweak their own take to fit in. Then we lose those WILD, out-there opinions that used to make reading critics fun.
