My cousin's AI art went to a gallery show because nobody read the fine print
Last month my cousin submitted an AI generated landscape to a local open call in Portland. The entry form asked for a medium description and she just typed 'digital painting', nobody checked the files. It hung in a real gallery for 10 days next to oil pieces and watercolors. The funny part is a guy offered $300 for it on the spot, she told him it was AI and he got mad, like she'd tricked him. But she never hid it, the description was right there in her artist statement. Does the gallery have any blame here for not reading submissions, or is that on the artist?

Ha, that buyer's reaction is the real art criticism here. He liked the piece enough to drop $300, but the second he found out it wasn't painted, it lost all value to him. That's not about the art, that's about him wanting the story of a human struggling with paint. Your cousin's statement was right there, and the gallery form asked for a medium, not a confession. If he'd read the card, he'd have saved himself the embarrassment. Honestly, the gallery fumbled harder than she did. An open call means you check the work, and they let their own rules slide. She should sell prints of that landscape, call it "Portland's Blind Spot.

Gallery's got nobody to blame but themselves, plain and simple. They run an open call, they should vet what goes on their walls, that's basic due diligence. Your cousin didn't do anything wrong, she answered the form as it was asked, that's on them for being lazy with the fine print.
The buyer getting mad is kinda funny though. Dude saw a picture he liked, offered cash, and only got upset after he knew the backstory. That says more about his own bias than any trickery on her part, the art didn't change the second he learned how it was made. If he liked it enough to pay for it, that feeling doesn't vanish just because of the tool used.
Your cousin should take the win. She got a real gallery showing out of it, and that's more than most people manage, AI or not.
