Burnt garlic powder ruined my fries, now I pre-toast everything

Last Tuesday I sprinkled garlic powder straight onto potatoes before frying at 400°F, and they came out bitter and black in spots. My sister said I should toast the spices in a dry pan for 30 seconds first, which sounded weird but totally fixed the flavor. Has anyone else had luck pre-toasting rubs or do you just add spices after the air fryer cycle ends?

400°F is way too hot for garlic powder, it burns before the potatoes even cook through. I just season after the air fryer beeps and get way better results without the extra step.
