Hit episode 500 of One Piece last night and I'm genuinely conflicted on whether the pacing ruins the experience or just makes you appreciate the source material more

After slogging through 45 minutes of reaction shots in a single fight scene, I can't tell if the slow burn builds tension or just wastes my time, so which side do you fall on?

Oh man, this drives me up a wall. In my experience, the slow pacing in One Piece actually mirrors how a lot of things in life drag out way longer than they need to. Like, have you ever waited for a package that says "out for delivery" for three days? The tension builds sure, but mostly you just get annoyed and start questioning your choices. I'd argue the source material shines better when you can binge read the manga in a weekend instead of sitting through those 10-minute stretches of characters just yelling each other's names. Take it with a grain of salt though, some folks love that extended moment stuff.

Take it with a grain of salt" is a good way to put it. I had a friend who swore by the anime for years, then finally sat down and read the Marineford arc in the manga over a long weekend. He said it was like watching a different story, way tighter and more intense without all the extra padding. He still watches the anime for the big moments and music, but he said he wouldn't have made it through Dressrosa without switching to the manga first. Just his experience, but it stuck with me.
