Just finished my first full rewatch of Neon Genesis Evangelion and actually understood the ending this time

I was watching the last two episodes at my friend's apartment and had to pause it three times to look up explanations online, but I think I finally got it. Has anyone else had a show click for them on a second watch?

I mean, you needed three online guides just to get it, that kinda proves the ending is a mess. My first watch made sense to me, the whole point is it's about personal feelings not some big puzzle to solve. Maybe it's just me but looking up explanations takes away from what the show is actually saying.

Remember when my friend watched it and got so mad he threw a pillow? He kept saying it felt like the writers just gave up. But then he read a fan theory about the last shot being a memory, not real, and it clicked for him. He told me it wasn't about solving it, but that little detail helped his own feelings make sense, you know? Kinda like what you're saying, @oscar712, about it being personal.
