The day my anime club watched 3 episodes and argued for 2 hours

Last Saturday my local group in Portland did a rewatch of Neon Genesis Evangelion episode 14 and it turned into a full blown debate about whether the show's abstract symbolism was genius or just lazy filler. 15 people showed up and by the time we finished the third episode, two members were nearly yelling over Kaworu's role. We barely got through 4 episodes total because everyone wanted to pause and dissect every single frame. Has anyone else had a viewing night get completely derailed by a single scene or theme?

Wait, you barely got through 4 episodes total? That's wild. I mean, I get pausing to talk about stuff, but 2 hours of arguing over one episode sounds exhausting. And honestly, people nearly yelling over Kaworu's role? That's a whole other level of intense. I can't even imagine my group getting that heated, we usually just make dumb jokes and move on. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like half the fun of NGE is just letting the weirdness wash over you instead of dissecting every frame.
