Heard my landlord in the stairwell say "just paint over the black stuff" about unit 4B
I was coming back from the laundry room at 11pm and caught my landlord talking to a guy with a paint bucket. He said the mold in 4B is "nothing a coat of Kilz won't hide" and that the tenant signed the lease so it's their problem now. I took a photo of the bucket label from the trash the next morning and emailed it to myself, just in case. Anyone else dealt with a landlord just painting over mold? What did you do that actually got them to fix it?
How long has the tenant in 4B been living with that mold before you caught him saying that? The thing about Kilz is it seals stains on the surface but it does nothing about the moisture problem behind the wall, so the mold just keeps growing and eventually pushes through the paint. Did you get a look at whether the mold is from a leak or just from humidity, because that changes how bad this really is? If there's an active leak in the wall or ceiling, painting over it is basically just hiding a problem that will come back worse in a few months. Have you told the tenant in 4B what you heard, since they're the one breathing that air every night?
