My stockpile of Mountain House and my neighbor's stash of store brand freeze dried meals went head to head

I traded her a couple packets after the sirens went off last Tuesday in Omaha. Hers had this weird chemical taste, like licking a battery. My Mountain House tasted almost normal after 8 months in the dark. Has anyone else noticed a big quality gap between brands or am I just picky after eating MREs in the Army?

Tbh that chemical taste is probably the oxygen absorbers leeching into the food if they packed it wrong. I had a buddy who bought a pallet of store brand freeze dried stuff and half of it tasted like burnt plastic after a year.

Yeah that tracks honestly. Oxygen absorbers are basically just iron powder and if they get wet or damaged they can definitely mess with the taste. Ive seen people online testing old MREs and the ones with busted oxygen absorbers always taste chemically or metallic. Plus store brand stuff usually cuts corners on the packaging quality so its way more likely to happen. If youre buying bulk freeze dried food you gotta check that the pouches are actually sealed right before you store them long term.
