Retrofit new board or rebuild old one, took the rebuild path
Last month a 15 year old dryer at my shop in Des Moines died on a commercial call. Customer had two quotes: new control board for 320 bucks or I rebuild the old relay pack for about 40 in parts. I went with the rebuild because the original board was salvageable. Spent an afternoon swapping relays and resoldering a cracked trace. Unit has run fine for 3 weeks now and the customer already sent me two referrals. Anyone else still rebuilding old boards instead of swapping them out?
Wait, 40 bucks in parts versus 320 for a new board and the old one was still salvageable? That gap is nuts, I figured most shops stopped doing board level work years ago because the labor eats the savings. Three weeks of running fine plus two referrals off one call tells me you came out way ahead on that deal. How long did the resolder and relay swap actually take you, because if it was really just an afternoon that math gets even better. I keep hearing the "just swap it" line from supply houses but a cracked trace is such a simple fix most of the time.
