Am I the only one who had to pick between a bucket truck and a grapple saw for storm cleanup in Wichita?
After a nasty ice storm rolled through Wichita two months back, I had a choice: rent a bucket truck for $1,100 a week or drop $4,500 on a used grapple saw for my mini skid. I went with the grapple saw because I could reach limbs from the ground and not worry about getting stuck in soft lawns. It was great for piling brush but useless for anything high up, so I ended up calling a buddy with a bucket anyway. Should've just paid the rental fee and saved the cash, has anyone else picked the flashy tool over the boring one and regretted it?
Picked up a used stump grinder last spring for $2,800 because I swore it would pay for itself in a month. It chewed through two stumps in my yard and then the belt snapped, bearings went bad, thing sat in the corner of my garage looking at me for eight months. My neighbor paid a guy $300 to grind his stumps and was done in an afternoon while I was watching YouTube videos trying to figure out how to fix mine. Sold it for $900 this summer and felt lucky. Buying the tool always feels smarter than renting it until you're the one stuck with it.
