Had to choose between a new climbing saw or fixing the old Stihl 201T for a big maple removal in Tacoma.
Went with the repair, but the carb gave out halfway up and I lost a whole morning. Anyone else had a job go sideways because of a tool you thought was solid?

Honestly, losing a morning on one job just feels like part of the business sometimes. It's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. You fix the saw, you finish the tree later, the client still pays. Making a huge ritual out of testing gear seems like overkill to me.

Oh man, that feeling is the worst. I'm with @charles766 that it happens, but man does it sting when you're already up the tree. My own rule is to test gear the day before, but I've totally been the guy who "tests" it by pulling the cord twice in the garage and calling it good. That strategy has bitten me more than once, usually in the rain.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling. I had a similar thing happen with a pole saw right before a big hedge job. Now I always run my gear for a full ten minutes in the yard the day before a big removal, just to find those gremlins. It's saved me a few times.
