Found a Roman coin in a field near Colchester, but my friend's metal detector was way better than mine.

We were scanning a plowed field where a villa was found before. My basic machine just gave a buzz, but his model with ground balance and a clear screen pinpointed the coin, a worn sestertius from the 2nd century, right under some roots. The right tool made the difference between a maybe and a real find. What's the one piece of gear that's made the biggest difference for your site work?

That gold ring find just sounds like luck to me.

Ever read that article about how good headphones are more important than a fancy detector screen? I upgraded to a solid pair with full ear cups, and the difference in hearing faint signals is crazy. What headphones do you use?

Honestly, I've never bought that idea. My detector's screen is a game changer. I found a tiny gold ring last week because the target ID was solid in a trashy area. My ears would have missed it through all the chatter. A good screen gives you hard data, not just a sound you have to guess about. For me, the visual info is way more reliable.
