Lost $400 on a fake Roman coin from eBay last spring
I saw a 'rare denarius of Marcus Aurelius' listed for $450, claimed it came from an estate sale in Ohio. Did zero research, just jumped on it because the price seemed too good. Turned out it was a modern cast copy made in Bulgaria, and the seller vanished after I paid. I filed a dispute but eBay sided with them because I waited 45 days to check. Has anyone else gotten burned by fake ancient coins on auction sites?

the seller vanished after I paid" - yeah that's the classic move unfortunately. They know exactly what they're doing, they set up a fake account with a few cheap legit sales first to build feedback, then drop the big scam coin and disappear. Happened to a guy I know with a "Constantine gold solidus" that was actually a brass button from a coat lol. eBay's customer service is basically useless for stuff like this, they just auto-rule in favor of the seller if you take longer than 30 days to notice. Next time try paying with a credit card instead of PayPal, some cards have purchase protection that covers fake goods even after eBay's window closes. Or stick to VCoins or MA-Shops where they actually verify what they sell, the prices are higher but you won't get stuck with Bulgarian copies.
