Wasted $300 on a fake Roman coin off eBay last spring

I got into ancient coin collecting back in April and saw this 'rare denarius of Julius Caesar' for $300. The seller had good reviews but it turned out to be a modern cast copy with wrong letter spacing. I should have checked the metal composition before buying, lesson learned. Has anyone else gotten burned by fake artifacts online?

Paid $300 for a Julius Caesar denarius that probably weighs less than a nickel. eBay should have a "history's greatest lies" section for coin listings.

Get where you're coming from but honestly a real Caesar denarius for $300 sounds like a price you'd pay for a worn one anyway. I've seen worse fakes go for more on eBay so maybe it's actually real just beat up. Have you tried checking the edge or the weight against a known authentic one?
