Serious question: Did that car fire on I-95 last month change how you pack your emergency kit?

I was stuck in traffic about a mile back from that semi that caught fire near the Fredericksburg exit. Watched a guy pull out a proper fire extinguisher from his trunk and handle a small grass fire before the trucks showed up. I've always carried a basic kit but never thought about a real extinguisher. Then yesterday I read online that half of car fires start in the engine and you got maybe 30 seconds before it's too late. So is it worth the $30 and the trunk space? Or am I overthinking one random event?

Man, that's wild you were right there. I actually heard some firefighter on a podcast say the same thing about that 30 second window. He said by the time you smell smoke and pop the hood, you're basically just watching your car become a bonfire. So yeah, I think a $30 extinguisher is cheap peace of mind. I grabbed one of those little Element ones after hearing that, it's smaller than a soda can and works on lithium batteries too, which is the scary new thing with EVs catching fire. You're not overthinking it, I'd say half the stuff in my "emergency kit" is just old granola bars and a tire inflator anyway. An extinguisher is actually useful.

My emergency kit's just expired registration and hopes at this point.
