TIL picking between a $22 hotel shuttle and a $6 city bus in Portland saved me 90 minutes
Flew into Portland for a wedding a couple weeks back and my flight got in at 11 pm, so I was standing at the curb with two options: the hotel shuttle that ran every 45 minutes, or the city bus that came every 20. I picked the bus, mostly since it was $6 versus a tip for the shuttle driver, and I figured I could just watch the stops on my phone. What I did not plan for was the bus driver yelling at me that my stop was three blocks past where the map app put it, and I ended up dragging my suitcase through a dark neighborhood at midnight. Shuttle would have dropped me right at the door. I still saved money, but I got to the room at 12:40 instead of maybe 11:30. Curious if other folks just eat the shuttle cost when it gets late, or do you gamble on public transit?
Man, I used to always cheap out and take the bus no matter what, but dragging a bag through a strange neighborhood at midnight would flip me to the shuttle real quick. Sometimes the extra twenty bucks is just buying you not being lost and annoyed at 12:40 am.
