A retired pilot in Tucson made me rethink what a good astro photo actually is
So I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday, showing some shots of the Milky Way I took near Kitt Peak. This older guy, turns out he flew C-130s for 20 years, glances over and says "nice, but what are you trying to say with it?". Honestly, I just wanted to show a pretty sky. He went on about how every photo should tell a story, not just show an object. I get the artistic side, but part of me thinks astrophotography is about capturing the raw data, the science, the detail in the nebula or the trailing stars. You can't always force a narrative when you're fighting mount drift and light pollution. He said my shots were too clean, like a textbook. That hit different because I spend hours on processing to make them clean. But maybe he's onto something? Do you all shoot for beauty, for science, or for a feeling? Has anyone else had a random conversation that flipped how you approach framing or editing? Or am I just overthinking this because one guy had an opinion?

Sounds like the guy just wanted to sound deep about a hobby that isn't his. A clean shot of the Milky Way is hard to get, and spending hours on processing to fight noise and drift is real work, not a lack of imagination. If a photo makes you stop and look, it already did its job, story or no story. Not every picture needs a message, sometimes the sky is just the point.
