Why does nobody talk about how hard it is to get a good shot of the Horsehead Nebula?

Everyone posts these perfect images, but I spent three nights in Joshua Tree trying to capture it with my ZWO ASI533MC camera. The real issue was nailing the exposure time to pull detail from the dark nebula without blowing out the surrounding gas. It took me over 12 hours of imaging and processing to get a result I was even halfway happy with. Has anyone else struggled this much with a specific deep sky target?

Seriously, the Horsehead is a nightmare. I had the exact same fight with my setup last winter. Getting the core of the nebula dark but detailed, while keeping the surrounding IC 434 glow from turning into a washed-out mess, is just brutal. I must have thrown out half my subs because the guiding would slip or the sky glow would spike. It feels like you need perfect conditions and a crazy amount of integration time just to see it start to pop.

Washed-out mess" is why I gave up and just bought a poster.
