Blew $85 on a paint thickness gauge that lies to me in the shop

Bought one of those cheap digital gauges off a tool truck stop thinking it would help me spot filler on trade-ins, but it reads different numbers every time I put it on the same spot of a clean door. Compared it to the old magnetic one my boss keeps in the top drawer and the cheap digital was off by 6 mils on a panel I knew was factory. Anybody got a gauge under $200 that actually holds a steady reading, or am I stuck borrowing the shop's one forever?
