A master tech in Detroit called my diagnostic process lazy, and he was right
Honestly, I still think about this one guy I worked with at a shop off Michigan Ave in Detroit about half a year back. I was chasing a random misfire on a 2016 Silverado and had a scanner pointed at cylinder 4, ready to swap a coil. He walked over, unplugged my scan tool, and hooked up a vacuum gauge to the intake, saying if I trust live data over a $30 gauge I will be guessing all day. Turns out the intake gasket was leaking, a 45 minute job, and I had already sold the customer a coil and a plug. Ngl, I felt like a rookie even though I have been turning wrenches for 9 years. He did not say anything else, just handed me the gauge and walked off. Any of you guys run into an old timer who makes you rethink how you do diag?
