Check your baggage at the door, seriously. Talking about an ex just makes the new person feel like a therapist or a comparison. Keep the focus on the two people actually on the date.

The thing is, bringing up an ex can actually be a huge red flag about someone's own behavior. If they're always the victim in every story, that tells me they might not take any responsibility. In my experience, it's a way to test the waters and see how much nonsense a new person will put up with. It sets a low bar from the start. So it's not just about being rude, it's a warning sign about how they handle conflict.
