My blind date in Portland wore AirPods the whole time and called it 'parallel dining'
So this happened last Friday at a Thai place on Hawthorne, and about 10 minutes in I notice her left AirPod is glowing. I ask if she needs to take a call and she goes "no, I just focus better with a podcast on, it's like parallel dining." We sat there for 40 more minutes while she nodded along to whatever she was hearing, and I still don't know if that was a bit or if I got punked. Has anyone else had a date do the earbud thing, and do you bail right away or stick it out to see how weird it gets?
40 minutes is not that long. People check their phones at dinner all the time and nobody calls it "parallel" anything. I've seen couples at Ken's on 82nd sit there for an hour, both scrolling, barely talking. This is the same thing with a fancier name. The podcast is weird, sure, but the silence part? That's just dating in 2024. Sticking around to see how weird it gets is the real waste of time. She told you who she was in the first 10 minutes.
