Serious question, is the 'awkward silence' on a first date always a bad sign or just a normal thing?

I had a date last Friday at a pizza place downtown. We talked fine for the first 20 minutes but then we just sat there for maybe 30 seconds not saying anything. I felt super awkward and started rambling about the weather. My friend says it means there is no chemistry and you should just leave. But I also think sometimes people just need a second to think or eat their food. What do you guys think? Is a quiet moment actually a red flag or do some couples just need to get comfortable with the pauses?

My buddy Mike had a first date at a coffee shop and they hit a solid 45 second pause. He was about to bail but she just smiled and said "sorry, I'm thinking about what you said about your dog." They've been married four years now. I think people forget that a quiet moment can just be someone processing what you said, not a sign of doom.

Wait, are we really romanticizing awkward silences now?
