Saw a 400% jump in referring traffic after swapping one anchor text pattern
I used to put the same exact keyword phrase in every anchor for a client in Phoenix. Switched to mostly branded and naked URLs for 8 weeks, and their referring sessions went from about 45 a week to 180. Has anyone else tested anchor text diversity and seen a similar spike, or was it just the timing of a new backlink?
Had something weird like that happen with a plumber client back in 2022. We were hammering exact match anchors like "emergency plumber scottsdale" on every single link, and traffic was flat for months. Then my link guy got lazy and started using the business name and just the raw URL because he ran out of ideas, total accident. About 6 weeks later their map views and calls jumped hard, way more than the traffic bump you saw. Could've been Google's spam update that rolled out around the same time too, so who knows if it was the anchors or just luck. Either way it made me stop obsessing over stuffing the same phrase everywhere.
That laziness thing is real, my guy literally ran out of anchor ideas and just started pasting the homepage URL, and those do-nothing links ended up moving the needle more than the exact match ones ever did. Kinda makes you wonder if Google just wants to see natural looking links instead of the same keyword jammed in 200 times.
